DELHI:EROS TIMES: Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia on Thursday chaired two important meetings with a special committee of experts, to discuss further modalities for the implementation of government’s policies to support budding sportsperson.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of the department.

Sisodia said the problem in sports administration is that the decision making powers are held by those who have had no link to sports in their lives.
Delhi government has formed a special committee of experts (COE) with sports persons like Karnam Malleswari (first Indian woman to win a medal in Olympics, winner of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the highest Sporting honor), well known Indian sports persons like Gagan Narang and Manisha Malhotra.
The COE also includes Rajeev Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto Ltd. The roles and responsibilities of COE ranges from selecting eligible talented students, coaches, coaching techniques,
The first policy – ‘Play & Progress Scheme’, benefits the talent in sports at school level. Under 14 years students can get Rs 2 lakh per annul directly from the Delhi government and students in 14-17 years bracket can get Rs 3 lakh per annul, quantum of assistance may be enhanced by 20% subject to approval from COE.
Any student who has studied in Delhi for the past three years is eligible for financial assistance, and such students will also be eligible for specialized training at designated centers to the kids who are in the under 14 & 14-17 yrs age bracket.
The games shortlisted for this scheme are Athletics, Badminton, Swimming, Hockey, Wrestling (Boys & Girls), Cricket, Football, Boxing, Gymnastics, Kabaddi, Basketball, Judo/Karate, Table Tennis & Baseball. Specialized training for these sportsperson is organized at 18 centers like Chhatrasal Stadium, Thyagraj Stadium, East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex, Najafgarh Stadium etc.
The second policy – ‘Mission Excellence’ benefits the already established sportsperson, for their continuous growth.
100 top level sportsperson of Delhi to receive training & coaching on Govt’s expense, to prepare themselves to compete in international tournaments and championships.
Games to be promoted are those which are approved either by the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs or Sports/Indian Olympic Association.
It is important to note that the support will discontinue if the performance declines as compared to his/her immediate previous performance.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that before moving on to further discussions, it is important to take these policies to the sportsperson, since there is no point of such hard work if the benefit does not reach the real stakeholders.
